European Union

After the Second World War the map of Europe was redrawn at the Yalta Conference and divided into two blocs, the Western countries and the communist Eastern bloc, separated by what was later called by Winston Churchill an “Iron Curtain”. More than 40 million people in Europe had died as a result of the Second World War, including between 11 and 17 million people who perished during the Holocaust. The Battle of Kursk, which involved the largest tank battle in history, was the last major German offensive on the Eastern Front.

The other world religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism are also represented in the EU population. In 2009, the EU had an estimated Muslim population of 13 million, and an estimated Jewish population of over a million. Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union recognises the “status under national law of churches and religious associations” as well as that of “philosophical and non-confessional organisations”. There are about 150 regional and minority languages in the EU, spoken by up to 50 million people. Luxembourgish (in Luxembourg) and Turkish (in Cyprus) are the only two national languages that are not official languages of the EU. The most widely spoken language in the EU is English; the language is spoken by 50 per cent of the population and studied by 95 per cent of school students, although following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom only 2% of the population speak it natively.

Climate

Many countries in Europe are home to a sizeable Muslim minority, and immigration to Europe has increased the number of Muslim people in Europe in recent years. Two other language families reside in the North Caucasus (termed Northeast Caucasian, most notably including Chechen, Avar and Lezgin; and Northwest Caucasian, most notably including Adyghe). European ancestry predominates in North America and to a lesser degree in South America (particularly in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, while most of the other Latin American countries also have a considerable population of European origins). Europe is home to the highest number of migrants of all global regions at nearly 87 million people in 2020, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Candidate countries

64.9% of the residents live on the European side and 35.1% on the Asian side.The next largest cities in order of population are Madrid, Saint Petersburg, Milan, Barcelona, Berlin, and Rome each having over three million residents. In 1933, there were about 9.5 million Jewish people in Europe, representing 1.7% of the population, but most were killed, and most of the rest displaced, during the Holocaust. In 1897, according to Russian census of 1897, the total Jewish population of Russia was 5.1 million people, which was 4.13% of total population. The Jewish population in Europe was about 1.4 million people in 2020 (about 0.2% of the population).

This treaty was created in 1952 the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which was built on the International Authority for the Ruhr, installed by the Western Allies in 1949 to regulate the coal and steel industries of the Ruhr area in West Germany. By the end of the war, European integration became seen as an antidote to the extreme nationalism that had caused the war. Containing 5.5% of the world population in 2023, EU member states generated a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of around €17.935 trillion in 2024, accounting for approximately one sixth of global economic output. The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states that are located primarily in Europe. Access to basic necessities can be compromised, for example 10% of Europeans spend at least 40% of household income on housing. In Europe, many people are unable to access basic social conditions, which makes it harder for them to thrive and flourish.
